Anwar’s options PDF Print

By Leslie Lau and Shannon Teoh, The Malaysian Insider

There are many roads that can lead to power for the Pakatan Rakyat alliance if opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim indeed has the support of a majority MPs in his hand.

Today, the so-called "prime minister in waiting" demanded that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi convene Parliament next Tuesday to move against a motion of no confidence against the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition.

Next Tuesday is, of course, the day before Anwar goes back to court to face sodomy charges, in a trial he has claimed is politically motivated to stop in the tracks his challenge against the BN.

Such a move appears designed to play up the urgency of his moves to take power, and remove the threat of his court case.

By calling for a vote just days after Sept 16, when he failed to take power according to his self-imposed deadline, he is strengthening his case in his contention that he has the support to form the government.

The prime minister does not need to bring Parliament back into session on Anwar's say-so, and is not likely to.

And this will certainly lead to assertions from the opposition that Abdullah fears losing the vote.

Whatever happens, the stalemate will continue.

Constitutional expert Prof Abdul Aziz Bari believes that the Yang di-Pertuan Agong can also intervene to break the impasse.

"We are heading towards a stalemate," he told The Malaysian Insider.

But he points out that under Article 40a (2) of the Federal Constitution, the King may use his discretion to either appoint the prime minister or withhold consent for the dissolution of Parliament.

According to Abdul Aziz, the King could summon Anwar to the palace to furnish him with the list of MPs he claims supports him, and verify the claim by summoning the MPs as well.

He cited the initiative of the Rulers of Selangor and Perlis post-March 8 when they dealt directly with the elected lawmakers to ascertain their support.

"Should the claim by Anwar prove to be true then he needs to tell Abdullah to resign. This is actually putting the last nail in the coffin for as soon as Anwar manages to get 112 MPs with him, Abdullah no longer has the right to be in the PM's office," he said.

However, political analyst Khoo Kay Peng feels the most democratic answer is simply to wait until Parliament reconvenes on Oct 13.

"Anwar is using the only way possible now by asking the PM to resign. But it will not happen because even if Abdullah wants to comply, Barisan Nasional will not allow it. They would rather get rid of Abdullah than cede government," he told The Insider.

According to Khoo, there is no mechanism that Anwar can use to trigger a change in government until the opposition submits a motion of no confidence where legislators can vote democratically.

That is exactly what Anwar is now trying to do.

All we need is for his Majesty to be on the people's side and BN is history and Malaysia will create a new chapter in history.

A change is imminent, my Lord. Bless the request of the people.

Humbly, my Lord.

It's not just a question of Anwar or Abdullah's options now. It is a question of resolving the uncertainty which is exacerbating the financial stress in the country. Under the circumstances, surely it is the Prime Minister's responsibility and duty to resolve this uncertainty. Reconvene Parliament next Tuesday to settle once and for all this eternal question: Has he, hasn't he the numbers? That's the least the PM can do for the country.

If it is Oct 13 then what will happen to Pete by then.
Anwar is losing more credibility not because of the 916 deadline, but because we all know Pete (and others) is in suffering now!

It is not as simple as it sounds. Submission of a motion of no confidence against the PM must first get past the Speaker. Only if he allows this motion to be tabled will the legislators be permitted to vote. If he denies the petitioner the right of submission, then the motion is disqualified. No "No-Confidence" motion, no vote. A shouting match may ensue but that would not solve the problem. The Opposition can yet stage another walkout but that still would not solve the problem. Ultimately, the King might have to intervene but only if DSAI is able to conclusively show evidence of his purportedly "more than 31" crossovers and only if the King is absolutely certain that these "more than" 31 MPs are sincere in crossing over.

All this things take time. Who is there to ensure that the people who "matters" will still be around to assume the reins of power? Can anybody guarantee that? However, the million dollar question remains whether these "more than" 31 ppl exist or not.

By Oct 13th, BN would have collapsed due to its own internal conflicts.

All these moves by Badawi is to restrain and impress BN MPs and parties, and NOT the opposition!

Cannot take over not becos there is no law lah! There is law. The law is to prevent take over. It its like have laws to protect robber to rob! How can there be such clear laws for smooth power transition in a 3rd world country like Malaysia? If there is, we would be next to America in terms of democracy.

We have the law of jungle and Anwar has to use it to his advantage. Here is what I think he has to do...Get all the frogging MP plus the PKR MP minus Theresa for a meeting somewhere near to Putrajaya. Lets say he gets 130 MPs. Resolve to take over the government and get all of them present to sign. Then give a copy of this signatures to the Agong and then march to Putrajaya and just demand the PM to leave.

Simple.

If they march to Putrajaya, better to do it early morning or late evening. It gets hot and humid in the afternoon.

If UMNO/BN is so sure that Anwar does not have the numbers, then all AAB has to do is convene Parliament and expose Anwar's lie. That way, AAB will have a moral-boosting win. So AAB, what are you waiting for. Go ahead and convene to score a personal victory and expose Anwar's lie(if you dare!)

Whats the big deal? Why should the prime Minister drop everything just for one individual? October is not far away.

I think we should be concentrating on RPK's release (safe release).

308 is a miracle, we believe that it was a divine intervention. As God has begun the good works on that day for our beloved country Malaysia, we know that He's going to complete it, there's our dream homeland, fair & corruption free government, just & united society, , true racial harmony, loving & caring community...etc, let's continue to work on the dream, it may be hard & many barriers need to be cleared, but with God's help, we will be able to see our dream come true. Let's continue to strive for it, be patient & don't give up.
