(The Star) PETALING JAYA: Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim once again claimed that Pakatan Rakyat "has the numbers" and is ready to take over the Federal Government on Tuesday, Sept 16.

He added that Sept 16 will mark a “clear and concrete movement towards a change in the Federal Government.”

At a Pakatan Rakyat gathering to commemorate the 45th Malaysia Day at the Kelana Jaya stadium here on Monday night, he urged his supporters to have faith.

PKR treasurer and Selangor Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim, PKR president Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang, and DAP secretary general and Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng were among those who attended the gathering.

Thousands of supporters had packed the stadium, shouting “Reformasi” and issuing challenges to the ruling Barisan government.

Anwar had previously announced that he had sufficient numbers of Barisan Nasional Members of Parliament who were going to cross over to the opposition alliance for him to form a new government on Tuesday, Sept 16.

But sodomy allegations, a hastily-arranged overseas trip by Barisan backbenchers and a crackdown using the Internal Security Act had threatened to put the brakes on the PKR adviser’s takeover plans.

Earlier, DAP’s Lim Kit Siang said that six months ago, the idea of taking over the government would have been unthinkable.

“But now the people believe ... it’s not when 916 (or Sept 16) will happen, but the fact that Pakatan can actually topple the government,” he said, adding that the ISA arrests of an online portal editor, an MP and a journalist had pipped things to the opposition alliance’s favour.

PAS secretary-general Kamaruddin Jaafar went so far as to say that the new “Pakatan federal government” will include Barisan members who have rejected their component parties.

The other leaders also spoke about the use of the ISA against civilians, with Selangor’s Khalid saying that the state government would work to release all detainees.

Penang’s Lim Guan Eng urged other Barisan leaders to follow the example of de facto Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim and resign if they too objected to the use of the ISA.

He also applauded Zaid for being “the first Barisan leader to quit for his principles and idealism.”

Changes have been rapidly aggravated since 8th March 2008, thanks to the influential Anwar who managed to spearhead the much-needed motivation among Malaysians.

I am not sure what shall happen tomorrow on 16th September (few mins away). I don't really care who is PM. All i care is that there shall be more truthful and just leaders taking charge for the sake of our generations to come. That they think of removing graft and inefffective policies and restore the confidence of the rakyat.

That the ISA and Printing Press be reformed to be more rakyat-oriented rather than colonialist-mentality. That the ruling govt be more articulate and eloquent in addressing rakyat concerns rather than hoodwinking with political statements.

We have done our part as rakyat that pays all the taxes. It is time those who receive them channel it decently back.

As I write this Malaysia Day has started. Whether a Pakatan government is possible or not, we shall leave it to the wise men of Pakatan. But positive change has already happened since March 8. Despite some setbacks in the form of the ISA being used, Malaysians of all races are more united than ever before. Sure, there are pockets of rabid racists in every Malaysian community. But the vast and overwhelming majority of Malaysians want a peaceful transition of power. This is what DSAI has promised. This is what we want. http://www.ctchoolaw.********.com/

The Star - 'Thousands of supporters had packed the stadium, shouting “Reformasi” and issuing challenges to the ruling Barisan government.'

Is it 'more than 25000' or just 'thousands'?

And what are the so called 'challenges issued'? Everyone there shouted their own challenge to the government?

Even the reformasi shout is not a challenge issued to the government. All those there already know the government (BN) can never reform. That's why we have Pakatan Rakyat.

Be careful with your reporting. You might be arrested under ISA.

Won't be surprised if there are MPs from Umno, Sarawak and Sabah quitting from the BN. The atmosphere was electrifying and certainly worth being there to hear the speeches. They were consistent and more to come.

well done for gaining the people's confidence

I am not comfortable with the word "topple" as in toppling the government not that the thieving politicians don't serve to be toppled. You Pakatan are going to displace the current government smilies/grin.gif

I would go with Pakatan Taking control of/ Conquering the Government. Go for it Pakatan and May Almighty guide all of you in Pakatan to run the country in an honest fashion. Ameen

If 'topple' is not correct to describe the change in govt, how about 'demolition' -- as in using C4. This word should be familiar to those in control of C4, huh? Whatever word one uses, the end result would be the same--good governance replacing rotten mis-governance. We hope to see the demolition of arbitrary arrests of citizens without trial, end of corruption, end of cronyism, nepotism, and a host of other 'isms' --- and of course islam hadhari, the new deviant teaching, ignored by JAKIM. May Allah bless this nationof ours. Ameen!
