KUALA LUMPUR (ST) - MALAYSIA'S government faced a storm of criticism on Monday over a series of arrests under internal security laws, with several cabinet ministers breaking ranks to speak out against the move.

The furore highlighted disarray within the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition, which has been rattled by opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim's plans to seize power by persuading government lawmakers to defect.

Mr Anwar has set a Tuesday deadline to topple the coalition, but said on the weekend that although he has enough support for a takeover, the timing could be delayed in order to preserve national stability.

Cabinet minister Zaid Ibrahim, who is in charge of legal affairs, led the criticism of the Saturday arrests of an opposition politician, the nation's leading blogger, and a reporter for a Chinese-language daily.

Mr Zaid said the government was wrong to use the Internal Security Act (ISA) which provides for indefinite detention without trial, and was willing to step down for his stance if necessary.

'The ISA is open to abuse. If we cannot be fair in implementing it, then we should confine its use to terrorists,' he said, according to the New Straits Times.

The arrests triggered fears that the government was planning a wider crackdown on dissent to crush Mr Anwar's ambitions, but the quick release of the journalist on Sunday eased fears of a national crisis.

Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar defended the arrests but said the police carried them out without instructions from him, in comments ridiculed by the opposition which said he and Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi were accountable.

Mr Abdullah must explain whether the crackdown was rolled out 'in order to protect his position as prime minister now that he is under attack,' opposition veteran Lim Kit Siang told a press conference.

Mr Lim said it appeared that deputy premier Najib Razak, and Trade Minister Muhyiddin Yassin were 'teaming up' to challenge Mr Abdullah who has faced repeated calls to quit since a drubbing in March general elections.

Information Minister Ahmad Shabery Cheek also called on police to explain the ISA arrests, and welcomed the release of the journalist, whose offence was to report racist remarks made by a ruling party politician.

Opposition lawmaker Teresa Kok, from the Chinese-based Democratic Action Party which is a member of the opposition alliance, was also arrested over allegations she complained about the noise of morning prayers at a mosque.

She has said the accusation is 'preposterous'.

The other detainee is Malaysia's leading blogger, 58-year-old Raja Petra Kamaruddin, who has repeatedly targeted government figures on his website 'Malaysia Today'.

He has already been charged with sedition and defamation after linking Mr Najib and his wife to the sensational murder of a Mongolian woman. -- AFP

This comedy show would have won the Oscar if it was not so tragic in terms of the human victims. The BN Government need to find another 4 more members and they can be considered for the GROSS STUPIDITY award.

Wake up. We here in Australia are laughing our heads off at you bunch of imbeciles, as well as shaking our heads in disbelief and I am sure many people from other countries are laughing too. Likewise, we are crying for the poor innocent victims. If you don't get your punishment in this life, you can bet you will get it in the next. KARMA.

Hats off to you Zaid but leave the gang (UMNO) as well and join PR - you can do more for the nation - time to pay back to the nation what you got from it by serving Malaysians well.

The government will give the clown Nazri this posts again, where he will be JUDGE and JURY at the same time.

1. Is ISA still relevant today? Some will argue that it should be abolished while some might think otherwise. Before anything else, let us understand what ISA is all about. ISA first became a feature of then Malaya in 1948 as a primarily measure to combat the armed insurgency of the Malayan Communist Party during that time. The legislation was then inherited by Malaysia after it gained independence from Britain and has been in used since then.

For aguement sake, if let's say that there is still indeed a need to continue the use of ISA, then I believed that it has to be urgently reviewed and amended in its implementation/governance/objectives to better serve our current environment rather than just adopting its draconian-age-out-of-date objectives. In a nutshell, are we still fighting the same communist insurgent-enemy today? Obviously not!!

2. My hats off to our Law Minister YB Zaid Ibrahim for openly condemning the arrest of the RPK, MP Teresa Kok and the Sin Chew reporter, and rebuked the use of ISA. It is indeed to know that is still an honourable man who stands by his principals amongst the rotten apples. The people needs more man like you, who speaks without fear of being prosecuted and without prejudice.

I salute you, YB.

3. Home Minister Albar, please get your facts right before opening your mouth. Too much has been said and most have been imbicilly quirky responses from you, adequate to make the final op contestant for the "Last Comic Standing". If you did not issue the instruction, who did then? The corporal at Bukit Nenas?

3. Free RPK and MP Teresa Kok at once. If there's any suggestion of wrongdoings or violations of law or actions which may incite racial tension, then proof it in court. Charge them with Sedition and bring them to trial. We would love to hear the facts in court.

Free RPK and Teresa Kok!

With Zaid who just shook the foundation of BN, the entire BN is going to fall like bowling pins.... and what a timing?!! Tonight, this will be the main theme of Anwar's speech.... and tomorrow, more will follow Zaid, and we can see some resemblence to Anwar's prediction that September 16th. is the day for the collapse of BN.

Many of the Umnoputras have been living a life of lies & deception. They don't know the meaning of truth and cannot distinguish between right and wrong. Their value systems are all so screwed up. They are just not fit to be our leaders. So all you BN imbeciles, please get out.

MCA & Gerakan, you're just a bunch of eunuchs. You have no power, no voice and no balls.

These are the men who a few months ago were hell bent on the further Islamisation of Malaysia. These are the men who proudly boasted that this country was run on Islamic principles and Values. And they had you all fooled, they used your religion to manipulate you at every turn.

Now these are the men who will stop at nothing no matter how low and underhand to protect everything about themselves that is totally NON Islamic

Do you wonder that the rest of the world is laughing at you and your take on religion

This Scribe finds it rather strange that despite the criticisms coming from the MCA and Gerakan leadership for it's handling of the ISA arrest and the Ahmad Ismail issue, Umno, especially Umno Youth and Putera Umno are not crying for the blood of the MCA, Gerakan leadership or going amok in the streets. This muted response from Umno is very simple. Umno knows that it can't govern the country without non Malay support. After what has thus far transpired, Umno can never get the non Malay support on it's own. Actually, if Umno had the choice, they wouldn't care a less about the non Malays. The only way Umno can get non Malay support is to use their proxy's, MCA, Gerakan, MIC, PPP, PBS, SPDP, LDP etc..

The non Malay BN component parties must be sincere to the Rakyat. If they want to stand up against racist Umno they must leave BN now! Don't be hypocrites by condemning the government and Umno while still remaining in BN. There is no such thing that Umno will change. The reason why Ong Ka Ting, Koh Tsu Koon, Ng Yen Yen, Pairin Kitingan, Bernard Dompok, Samy Veloo et al have their parties still within BN is for their own political survival...More

First of all full respect to Zaid Ibrahim. At last someone is from BN has the guts to say no.

after 51 yrs and we chinese being called "pendatang" i am very dissapointed... thoughout the years what chinese has brought to the country? look at the last Asian games out of all the gold medals only one from Shalin Zukifli if i am not wrong and the rest from "pendatangs" and it is also the pendatang who won the only medal in recent olyimpics. Look at the honours we have brought to the country and yet PENDATANG....I am working overseas and whenever my fellow friends here asking me if i am a Malaysian Chinese...i told them no i am a Malaysia and i am always proud to say so. No offense to our fellow Malay friends but dont divide our good relationship of 51 yrs. We are part of country dont marginalize us...

Great just GREAT, we have here a deputy communications minister who does not know why MT today website was blocked, a home minister who says police acted on their own, a DPM keeping low profile on the issue, a PM who still thinks police had a good reason to act and an information minister who says he does not have the info.

To all those who voted for BN in the last general election, you must be feeling like idiots, thats why the costitution provides for the removal of an elected goverment before its tenure is over.
