BN will definitely increase prices after elections PDF Print
Wednesday, 16 January 2008 14:46
As BN will definitely increase prices after elections with subsidies of RM 40 billion annually completely unsustainable, Malaysians must demand a full commitment from BN to an equal share in Petronas profits {mosgoogle right} The Star estimated on 10.1.2008 that the Malaysian government will spend RM 40 billion on subsidies annually between 2007-8, with RM 35 billion in fuel subsidies and RM 5 billion in other subsidies such as cooking oil, flour, education, housing and agriculture. This huge amount of subsidies is unsustainable and the only reason that fuel, cooking oil and flour prices have not risen is to allow BN to win votes in the coming general elections.

As BN will definitely increase prices after winning the general elections, Malaysians must press for a full commitment from BN in the coming general elections to demand an equal share in the Petronas profits to reduce Malaysians’ financial burden. BN claims that inflation rate for 2007 is only 2% when the true picture on the ground in more than 20%. When prices are increased, especially fuel, true inflation rate on the ground may go up to more than 40%.

DAP expresses concern that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has still not woken up to the challenges of negative impact of high oil prices that has reached US$100 per barrel, the NEP and Malaysia’s declining oil reserves that will turn Malaysia from an oil exporter to a net oil importer in 2011, will damage future economic growth and prosperity. The triple shock of high oil prices, the anti-competition, anti-growth and anti-trade NEP as well as Malaysia’s declining oil reserves are huge challenges that the BN government has not even begun to address.

This oil revenue has allowed Malaysia to cushion the negative impact from mismanagement, wastage of public funds and corruption scandals that have plagued Malaysian society and would otherwise have crippled Malaysia’s economy. When Malaysia becomes a net importer or oil by 2011, one wonders where Malaysia is going to find the tens of billions of ringgit needed to fill in the gap in the nation’s finances.

Oil contributed RM 53,311 million or 37.6% of the 2007 government’s revenue of RM 141,790 million. In other words more than three quarters of oil revenue are used to fund the RM 40 billion subsidies, which is not sustainable and if continued would lead the country to bankruptcy. Despite Petronas earning RM 500 billion since it was established in 1974, Malaysians have not benefited from a single cent in sharing in the oil revenues. These contrasts with an oil importer like Singapore that can afford to distribute S$ 2,000-2,500 a year to poor and unfortunate families.

US financial giant, Morgan Stanley had estimated in 2004 that over the last two decades corruption cost Malaysia US$100 billion (RM 380 billion). With Petronas earning more than RM 500 billion since it was established in 1974, one can imagine how much was stolen and that only RM 120 billon or 24% of the RM 500 billion in Petronas profits were channeled to the people with the remaining 76% or RM 380 billion stolen by corrupt officials.

In other words for every RM 4 spent on development projects, the value of work done is only RM 1 with the remaining RM 3 lost to corruption, waste, inefficiencies and leakages. The actual loss may be higher as the scandal of repairing Chinese primary schools in Muar showed that RM 30,000 was spent when the value of work done was only RM 3,000.

The time has come for Malaysians to demand a general election commitment from BN to give an equal share in Petronas’ profits. Those earning less than RM 3,000 per month is given an annual cash grant of RM 3,000 and families with a combined income of RM 6,000 per month be given RM 6,000 annually. Such a scheme would cost slightly more than RM 30 billion annually, less than the RM 40 billion subsidies spent. Better the oil money is spent on the people than be wasted by corruption or white elephant projects that are not productive except to the contractors.

Equal share of Petronas profits...? Damn RPK, where did you find this guy...

Lim, hats of for speaking about the dollar sign bro.. nice one. Anyways, YEA..!! why not...? Lets spread the wealth.. Economically speaking, doing so is actually a good idea in terms of circulating more money into households instead of the classic Malay Datuk ******* who thinks playing golf means he is in the ranks of "the smart CEO" while in actual fact he is just the plain old cunning, headed to hell dumbfark.

BUT Lim...,

to do so, we gotta cut off the hands that has those greedy twitching fingers..

Screw you BN and screw you too petronas..

All of us know how to ask.LGE should know that all the asking is falling on deaf ear, before, now and in the future as long as umno is in control.LGE also know to replace umno, there can only be one opposition or no opposition. The rakyat do not wish or want him to ask,we want him to deliver the ONE opposition that can unseat umno and bring about positive change.Do not deprieve the rakyat of this once in a life time opportunity.

weird... weird...

BN govt. keep saying no to subsidies this and that. Even DPM said earlier this month : if the opposition were to do that, the country will go bankurp.

BUTEveryday, we will hear, BN Govnt will launch this project worth x billions, that project worth xx billions

Pelik sungguh... WHY NO ONE EVEN RISE THIS QUESTION??

How come BN can declare that they have money to launch project after project that worth billions upon billions every day? But no money to suisidies petrol or even cooking oil?

Why an average mamat/chong/muttu/joe on the streets or even most of us (here-onilne) never even see this as an issue?

Between the choice of continuing the subsidies and abolishing it I rather have the former. This I tell you why. I just don't trust the present gomen with the savings from removing the subsidies. At least I get to enjoy the reduced prices instead of seeing these scumbags helping themselves to to till.

Our PM is wide awake. He is not sleeping. He knows what is going on. BUT he don't know how to handle all these issues. No idea whatsoever.. And this is worst than sleeping. Because if you know what to do, but is temporarily asleep, you will wake up one day and immediately kick back into actions.

First do away with NEP and get everyone regardless of race to grow the economy. When the cake is big enough we do not need the tongkat anymore. The problem is that the small economy cake is shared only among the cronies and for sure when the government need to find money to help subsidies the people they do not have the money anymore as they have all been siphoned off somewhere. Just wondering where do they get the money to give each UMNO division head to spend RM3 million and recently RM250,000 for each state assemblyman and MP to spend for the GE, I was told.

Whether the BN government gives the Rakyat a share of Petronas profits is a separate issue. Any government of the day must be accountable to the people who elected them.

If the government increases the prices of any thing, it must be transparent to show the need for such increase in the first place; it must reveal the accounts showing how much the nation has received over the years as income and where the money has been spent. It cannot expect the Rakyat to accept the government to hide the accounts or agreements under OSA and unilaterally expect the Rakyat to accept any increase of prices dished out!

The BN government must open up the accounts of Petronas and the secret agreements of the toll concessionaires for public scrutiny. The very fact that it could not be transparent about the accounts of these companies show that it has something to hide from the Rakyat.

Guan Eng,
It'd be good if you could provide some reliable statistics to substantiate the claimed 20-40% inflation rate - otherwise, it's just political speak.

We can then speak louder to friends, family members and acquaintances.

Mr Lim Guan Eng continues the opposition's on-going record of proving itself unelectable. From his letter we find:

1 - His rhetoric does not match his facts. E.g. in the same paragraph, he says 3/4 of 2007's oil revenue has gone to subsidies then contends that not a single cent has benefited the people. So.. who does the subsidy benefit then?

2 - In the same paragraph, he quotes that Singapore distributes RM2-2.5k to poor families, showing he's happy to credit the benefits bestowed by a neighbouring government whilst ignoring the benefits currently fulfilled by our government. Surely he is aware that the subsidies alone on average amount to ~RM1.5k benefit to ALL Malaysians, then we have the scholarship programs, housing programs, forcing developers to have low cost housing, etc. Is he quoting Singapore as DAP remains an adjunct of PAP?

3 - His 'treatise' continues with sums based on the assumption that all government revenue comes from oil, when he writes earlier that oil was ~37% of this sum in 2007. He also seems to not understand that the corruption estimates by Morgan Stanley needs to be reflected against the total economic output of the nation, not against government revenue alone, and certainly not against the government's oil revenue alone. Mr Lim again seems to put priority on rhetoric over factual analysis here.

4 - With such a poor analysis supporting the message Mr Lim and the DAP is trying to convey, it should come as no surprise then that the letter has not put forward any real solutions to the perceived problems, beyond the rhetoric of the need for more equitable sharing. How can this prove the DAP to be a credible alternative to government?

The Malaysian opposition must prove itself worthy of votes through their ideas, not just the failings of the current government. Otherwise, too many of us may well decide that it's better the devil you know...

It is hard for a family to get by with RM3000.00 a month and with so many earning less than that, it is time to pay living subsidy allowance to those with aggregate income of RM3,000.00 or less. Overnight, there will be no more hardcore poor.

Its so apparently clear that these recent 4 yrs of Barisan Nutcase governance under sleepy AAB had caused price increase on household consumer items , increase in crime , increase in petrol, increase in corruption ....etc.

The only thing i notice clearly about UMNO/BN, in this recent 4 yrs ( 2004-2007), is their intelligence and awareness, which had been well maintained and never increased.

This i am confident, will be well maintained and shall never increase all throughout the coming years.
