Raja Petra 'arrested under ISA' PDF Print
Friday, 12 September 2008 14:01

Controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamaruddin has been detained under the Internal Security Act, said his wife Marina Lee Abdullah.

MCPX

According to her, 10 police personnel from Bukit Aman came to their home in Sungai Buloh at about 1.10pm to arrest him. They also confiscated some books and VCDs.

When Malaysiakini contacted Marina at 1.25pm, the police personnel were still there.

On Sept 6, Home Minister Syed Hamid Albar had warned the 58-year-old editor of popular news portal Malaysia Today could be charged under the ISA for comments allegedly insulting Islam and Prophet Muhammad.

Several religious groups - Malaysian Islamic Development Department (Jakim), Yayasan Dakwah Islamiah Malaysia (Yadim), Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (Maiwp) and Federal Territory Religious Department (Jawi) - had lodged police reports against him.

The groups complained his comment in an article entitled "I Promise to be a good, non-hypocritical Muslim" allegedly used sentences that insulted Muslims.

Second time under ISA

Raja Petra, popularly known by his initials RPK, is also alleged to have allowed comments to appear on his website that degraded Islam and Prophet Muhammad in an article entitled "Not all Arabs are descendants of the Prophet".

This is the second time Raja Petra, a father of five and part of the Selangor royal family, has been detained under ISA, which allows for indefinite detention without trial.

His first arrest under the tough security law was on April 11, 2001. RPK was detained as part of a crackdown against reformasi activists in which nine others were also held.

At that time, he was webmaster for the now defunct FreeAnwar.com site.

Raja Petra was subsequently released after 53 days in detention. However, six of the reformasi leaders were eventually sent to the Kamunting Detention Centre in Taiping where they were detained for two years.

Charged earlier for sedition, defamation

The controversial blogger has earlier been charged with sedition and defamation after linking Deputy Prime Minister Najib Razak and his wife to the sensational murder of a Mongolian woman.

Abdul Razak Baginda, a close friend of the deputy premier, has been charged with abetting the murder of 28-year-old Mongolian woman Altantuya Shaariibuu, whose body was blown up with explosives.

Two police officers from an elite force, whose duties included guarding the prime minister and his deputy, were also charged with the killing.

The ISA, which human rights groups have pushed to have abolished, provides for renewable two-year periods of detention without trial and is normally used against suspected terrorists.

It has also been used to lock up opponents of the government, and last year five Hindraf leaders were detained three weeks after mounting a mammoth rally in the streets of Kuala Lumpur on Nov 25.

Raja Petra Kamarudin,

They can arrest you under their hidden agenda one day after removing the clamp on Malaysia Today! They cannot kill our dreams, for a free Malaysia! For our dream and your dream are one and the same dream!
Raja Petra, You are a truly resilient human being made of steel!

Lord Acton once said, “At all times sincere friends of freedom have been rare, and its triumphs have been due to minorities....”

Fellow Malaysians, this government’s unending thirst for corrupt wealth cannot be quenched even if that pot of gold truly exists at the end of the rainbow! Let us not satisfy the thirst of our freedom, by drinking from the cup of bitterness and hatred prepared by them!

This is a desperate act to riled up emotions of RPK supporters, start mass rallies and give the Government the opportunity to declare an "Emergency". Don't fall for it.

RPK has already said that he would only spend about 2 weeks in detention, probably less now that next week is the new "Merdeka" Day for the Rakyat.

Stay calm and cool, everyone.

We stay calm, cool and collected with our wits around us ! We have to wait till Tues. 16th Sept. 2008 and see if there are any developments then. If we have a new Govt. in place by then, or withing 4 days from then, we can let the new Home Minister free RPK, and maybe incarcerate All-Blur under ISA for using the ISA indiscriminately.

We must in no way give any excuse to the Despotic Govt. of the day, any excuse to declare an emergency and have an Operasi Lallang II, or to bring in the military.

Let us be patient for a little while longer ...

See I told you all yesterday. Something fishy is going on. The whole purpose on censoring MT is to block readers to read RPK articles. They re-opened it, because the first method was not successful but the motive remains the same.

Clamp down begins..... Anwar, don't tell me you did not see this coming. 916 a date for you to take over, but for BN is like a countdown bomb. You have made them panic even before the bomb explodes. You should not have "Hit the Grass to scare away the snakes". Prepare for a rough ride ahead. It's only the beginning. Sin Chew, Sun and Suara Keadilan were served show-cause letters.

if RPK is detained under ISA bcos insulting islam and prophet muhammad, Ahmad ismail has also insulted non-malays and many other umno members have also insulted other religions, shouldn't they be detained under ISA?

what is this double standard (sandiwara trying to curb ppl's voice) to detain RPK and not the many UMNO members?

Police are bought over by UMNO members and if worst come to worst, i would prefer the military to take over. we have nothing to lose anymore.

Though the ISA action may be anticipated by RPK, the thing that it is actually happening now is making many many Malaysians very unhappy and angry.

I hope changes to our country's adminstration in the very near future will help RPK and family out of the problem. Perhaps, M2Day should promptly start a public signature campaign to support RPK and have it presented to the Yang DiPertuan Agong as soon as possible.. May God bless RPK, his Family and all Malaysians.

Harap suatu hari nanti,Malaysia Today akan siarkan artikel dalam Bahasa Arab. huhuhu. Mungkin Raja Petra hanya menghina Islam Hadhari dan Imam Besarnya , Abdullah Badawi. Am I holding out for too much or will HRH step forth to be the last bastion
that protects ordinary citizens. This arrest does not present any Constitutional
conflict - the crux of Raja Petra'a arrest under ISA is a fundamental decision that weighs right from wrong action.

Double standards indeed. They let a Mad Cow loose to do road shows and detain our Dearest YM RPK under ISA.

This should spur the PR Government-in-waiting to boot them all out now itself and free YM RPK before he is even taken to Kamunting. Wishful thinking, may be, but hell, it's a Friday.

Let's wait for the press conference from the PKR office after Friday Prayers. Let's not any of us bite the several baits that will definitely be thrown at us to react by hitting the streets. Itu cara lama, bros & sisters.

Raja Petra has reinforced the idea of BANGSA MALAYSIA. He has made all of us unite under one Malaysia. He fights for all Malaysians, regardless of race and religion. And his ideas will not die. I love to present to us an exerpt of quotes from V for Vendetta (2005):

"We are told to remember the IDEA, not the man, because a man can fail. He can be caught, he can be killed and forgotten, but 400 years later, an IDEA can still change the world. I've witnessed first hand the power of ideas, I've seen people kill in the name of them, and die defending them... but you cannot kiss an IDEA, cannot touch it, or hold it... IDEAS do not bleed, they do not feel pain, they do not love..."

No matter what happen to RPK (God forbid!), we have to fight this IDEA. Ayuh rakan2! Let's come and fight this IDEA together! Let's unite and take down one of the most corrupted governments in the modern world! AYUH REFORMASI!!!

Ahmad Ismail has done far worst than Raja Petra. Why isn't he detained under ISA? Ahmad Ismail has brought the whole nation to the brink of chaos, almost on the verge of May 13! He is not only unrepented but has even given notice that he will be going on a national road show to create further racial hatred and tension in the country!

For doing worst than RPK, Ahmad Ismail is only suspended for 3 years? He can appeal when the storm blows over and could easily be pardoned soon next year. Anyhow, he is still eligible for the next election in 4 year's time.

Now the sandiwara becomes clearer - why Ahmad Ismail was so brave in playing up the racial sentiments of malays, going head to head with Gerakan while ignoring the president and vice-president! He has taken this punishment as a joke even to the extent of praising Badawi and Najib for the bold action. He looks almost happy that he is suspended and knows he will be rewarded in future for doing his duty.

The real target was Raja Petra and later those people who are responsible for UMNO’s slipping grip on power in Malaysia.

By sacrificing Ahmad Ismail, they could turn around and say that in order to be fair and show that they don’t practise double standard, all people considered as threat to racial harmony will be rounded up and detained under ISA. In doing so, NGOs, foreigners and oppositions in Malaysia cannot argue that only action is taken on Ahmad Ismail for creating racial tension but the others like Raja Petra, Bloggers and opposition parties would be spared from action.

They would sacrifice only one low level UMNO politician, albeit Ahmad Ismail, but they are able to put the big fishes like Raja Petra, LKS, LGE or Anwar behind bars which would slow down or stop completely their march to Putrajaya!

At the moment, the UMNO malays are very worked up and angry; they want equal action treatment and heads to roll. To satisfy this group of people, UMNO will present the head of somebody important, for the time being RPK!

MCA, Gerakan and MIC have fallen all over themselves in praising UMNO for practising fairness and justice to the non-malays. They have been duped into believing that BN will be setting up a code of conduct but when the punishment comes, UMNO will be the one deciding on the type of punishment - one set of rules for itself and another set for the rest of BN members.

Ahmad Ismail has no intention of repenting and UMNO is still supporting him as shown in the press conference held by him using the facilities meant for UMNO and Badawi with the support of certain UMNO leaders. It just shows that UMNO, MCA, Gerakan and MIC are all in cahoots in acting out the sandiwara.

Very soon, they will go after more targets with greater zeal and greater force!

It is a slap on the wrist for Ahmad Ismail but SA for Raja Petra for the lesser offence of going against the powers that be! Ahmad Ismail is due to go on a holiday while the punishment is meted out but Raja Petra and those people who will be targeted by UMNO will be sitting in Kamunting for a long, long time!

This beloved country of ours runned by BN has gone to the way of Zimbabwe and Myanmar!

they are testing the water, if all fronts are quiet after RPK's detention, there might be more to come. they have created the same conditions as pre-op lalang.

it's time for the rakyat to stand up to show your support for RPK. Hidup RPK! Hidup RPK! Hidup RPK!

DAULAT TUANKU. DAULAT TUANKU. DAULAT TUANKU.
Please save our Prince Raja Petra from the evil government. Please use your powers to restore peace and justice to MALAYSIA. Please do not let these evils hurt RPK, not even a single of his hair.
Only DYMM as the Head of Islam has the right to question as to whether RPK has insulted Islam or not.
Please help RPK. Your subjects are crying to you.
DAULAT TUANKU. DAULAT TUANKU. DAULAT TUANKU.
