For the sake of the nation, Malaysian politics must move beyond the tawdry mud slinging.

Michael Backman, The Age

THE other week, someone in Malaysia emailed me the report of the doctor who examined Saiful Bukhari Azlan — the young Malay man who claimed in June that Malaysian opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim had sodomised him.

I, along with heaven knows who else who has also seen the doctor's report, now know that Saiful's anus was pink rather than blue, had signs of good oxygenation, and that his rectum showed no evidence of bleeding or damage.

I repeat this somewhat in-your-face description because it encapsulates the direction that political discourse in Malaysia has taken: decency and propriety have been dispensed with — it really is a case now of no holes barred.

Indeed, the last decade of Malaysian politics has been dominated by endless debate about what Anwar Ibrahim — who was first charged with sodomy in 1998 — might or might not have done with his penis. Meanwhile, questions such as how the nation's wealth should be divided between the races, or how the Government should distribute contracts, remain unsettled.

Malaysia protests that it is a conservative, largely Islamic country, but you wouldn't know it judging from its sex-obsessed politicians. The latest allegation of homosexual rape against Anwar is ridiculous. Not so much the homosexual aspect, but the rape. The idea that a relatively slight 60-year-old with well-known back problems could hold down a tall, healthy 23-year-old man unassisted and rape him is pure rubbish.

Indeed, Saiful seemed to change his story after he first claimed to have been sodomised. Perhaps it dawned on him that if the sodomy appeared in any way consensual, then he too would be charged.

Saiful's escalation of the allegations is convenient for Anwar too. The claim of rape allows Anwar to honestly deny the claim. The claim of sodomy could be more problematic.

Although many of Anwar's supporters worldwide have never countenanced that there might be any truth to any of the sodomy allegations — perhaps due to an element of homophobia on their part — rumours about Anwar have circulated in Malaysia for years.

Hanif Omar, Malaysia's well-regarded police chief between 1974 and 1993, has said that he warned then prime minister Mahathir Mohamad about Anwar's alleged homosexual activities — which included involvement with a transvestite and a foreigner just before Hanif retired. He was concerned that Anwar was exposing himself to the threat of blackmail but Mahathir refused to believe the allegations.

Anwar spent time in jail for the first set of charges, which eventually were overturned. But they were overturned on a technicality. Two of the three presiding judges said in their judgement that while they believed that sodomy had taken place, the dates could not be pinned down.

But should allegations of sodomy disqualify Anwar from office? The risk of blackmail has significantly diminished. After the last 10 years of "did he or didn't he" speculation, Anwar barely has a reputation to protect on this score.

In any event, why should sodomy between consenting adults disqualify one from office when allocating millions of dollars in contracts to one's relatives seems almost a prerequisite for high office?

By any measure, one is a personal and a religious matter, whereas the other is quite clearly criminal. It really is a case where those living in glass houses shouldn't throw stones, particularly when those houses are worth millions, despite the fact the occupants are only on government salaries.

The bigger problem for Anwar is that in 1998 he was also charged and jailed for asking police to heavy witnesses into withdrawing their statements against him. That any deputy prime minister should have done that is unthinkable. Now, it is this that is Anwar's real crime. By comparison, the sodomy allegations barely matter. But of course people are far more titillated by sex than by matters of governance.

Now that Anwar is back in parliament, he has targeted September 16 — next Tuesday — as the date on which he will attempt to have the Government fall, as Government members switch sides to his coalition of opposition parties.

Malaysia's Government is tired, complacent and out of ideas. It needs some time out. All governments need this, which is why in modern countries, parties take turns at being in government. There is now a quantum gap between the government that Malaysians deserve and need and the government they get. But is Anwar the answer?

If he does come out on top, it would be nice if he doesn't award lucrative contracts to his friends, or manoeuvre his supporters into key positions in the national media, like he did last time. He must reduce the Government's role in business and not exchange one set of cronies for another but get rid of cronyism altogether. He must make bold, precise statements that he will allow the judiciary to be completely independent, that he will tightly define corruption and adopt zero tolerance towards it, applying this stance most harshly of all to his friends and colleagues. And he must guarantee media freedom.

He might also like to decriminalise sodomy too, not because of all the trouble it's given him, but as part of a push to modernise Malaysia

A worldwide economic downturn is coming and the Malaysian Government really does need to be enthralled by more than the colour of the interior of someone's backside.

Dear Malaysians, Indian Muslims are herdworking people. Malays are polite people. BUT Indian Muslims pretending, masquerading as Malays in Umno are the RASCALS who have caused so much damage to our beloved country. Wahai orang Umno, sedarlah punca masalah anda dan ambil tindakan yang sewajarnya demi negara yang kita sayangi ini.

It has never been Malay Muslims in charge of UMNO or Malaysia ever since the Malays allowed themselves to be frightened and used by the Melayu-celup Mahathir to get rid of Tunku Abdul Rahman in 1969. That must be the true lesson for the real Malays in UMNO and Malaysia to learn from, however distasteful it is. The worst is that the same Melayu-celup is being "invited" with a red carpet by Stupid Malays Ku Li and Muhyiddin to resume non Malay dominance of UMNO and further corrupt destruction of Malaysia. Mahathir has been and always will be a fascist with an inferiority complex and outsized ego who will STOP AT NOTHING, NOT EVEN DESTROYING MALAYSIA, to get his ways. Mahathir has already destroyed the real Malays through Hypocrisy, Corruption and Sodomy and a few stupid UMNO Malays are inviting him to sodomise Malays and Malaysia AGAIN. How STUPID can that be?

It is time that the Malays do not allow UMNO to decide their fate. If they are blind to the wolves in sheep skin (TUN mamak and Gang),the component parties should decide not to be pull along through their nose to support UMNO anymore.

If the component parties desert UMNO, UMNO is a nobody. Without the Malays and the component parties support, UMNO is brain dead. They should not be allowed to decide the fate of Malaysian or the Malays any more. The Mamak will died a slow death and UMNO will be gradually cleanse of all its dirts and shits. This wicked Mamak has raped and robbed the Rakyat 22 years with his lies and hypocrism.

Sensible Malaysians should not allow the 2000 racist delegates of UMNO to decide the fate of 27 millions Rakyat. BN component parties and Malays should support PR to deprive UMNO of its 'arrogant entitlement'.

I have to give Hanif and Dr. M props but to trust their words it is asking too much. Maybe, Hanif did a good work on the PDRM and at that time Dr. M seems to be doing a good job but in this instance... I have to go by what Dr. M will do to stay in power. The only reason he quit after 1999 is because he sensed that he is no longer welcome. Now we see him rear his ugly maniy faces in chedet.com.... Still playing to race and religion or the matter of fact any way to win support.. If sodomy will bring back his power I am afraid he will do that as well and make it legal after he come to power....

To the question of " why should sodomy between consenting adults disqualify one from office when allocating millions of dollars in contracts to one's relatives seems almost a prerequisite for high office?"

well its because UMNO plays "rectumus politikus" so the sodomy is classified as more "haram" than money politics smilies/smiley.gif

anyway since independance no "real melayu" had been a PM of this country they either had a siamese, turkish, indian or chinese blood, interestingly only indian-muslims especially from Penang seems more "concerned" about their "kemelayuan" status than my malay wife.

cheers

Dear Kent Chong & Socratesi

Backman is a famous Asian scholar in Australia. He contributes articles to The Age, the best selling newspapers in Victoria. Very vocal, and has friends throughout ASEAN especially our country, including KuLi.
What he writes should be regarded as objective views from an outsider(perhaps he actually knows more than we do). His opinions should be appreciated, not condemned.

He should be viewed as a friend of our country. He deserves respect and credit.

Now that the BN is no more in power in Penang and the projects being scrapped, there's nothing to feed these hungry ghosts from Umno. You must understand that an Umno Warlord like Ahmad Ismail also needs to feed his supporters as well to be relevant to them. Where do you think he and the rest of the Umno Warlords get their power from? That's why Ahmad Ismail is so angry that he is like a child in tantrum. However, this Scribe believes the thing that really got this guy to go berserk was that Badawi's son-in-law's (Khairy Jamaluddin) involvement in the Second Penang Bridge Project which is the only project apart from the Mengkuang Dam expansion to get federal funding...More http://*********.********.com

I enjoy reading Michael's articles. Very upfront, non biased, analytical. What he had mentioned, it reflects the Malaysians. I have friends, well, middle class, non the rich type like those UMNO cronies, they told me that they dislike the present governments. They even don't see the future in their next generations as BN only cares for their own families and cronies. They realised that from UMNO's mouth, they keep highlights ketuanan Melayu as this is to make the majority Malays 'happy' and feel that they are ahead of other races. My middle class Malay friends realised the seriousness of corruption in the government and they hope to see the change of government. They don't particularly fancy PR but they feel that they should give PR a chance. I agreed with Michael that in modern countries, it is good for parties to take turn to become the government. It is important to send the message to the arrogant rulling parties that they are not always INVINCIBLE!!!

Michael Backman is able to present a clear and unbiassed picture of what's going on in Malaysia these days

Its a great pity a few more people in this country cant be so open minded

Some of the comments to this article already demonstrate how difficult it is for many Malaysians to look past the details and view the whole picture

Malaysians should indeed expect more from their governments, both in terms of ethical behaviour and in material terms. For too long Malaysians have been happy to accept the "rough end of a raw prawn".. to paraphrase a hybrid aussieism

For too long, those who enter government do so merely for self-enrichment to the extent of bankrupting the nation, raping the nation of natural resources, human resources too.
The rakyat was too trusting, too complacent, too blurred by rose-colored blinkers.
That was then!
Now... better watch out! The rakyat has not only awakened but is coming out in full force - they'll not only make the politician, they'll break em too if need be! PEOPLE POWER!
Serve the people well and we might, just might, let you govern again and again and... smilies/grin.gif

Micheal Backman's article hits the nail squarely on the head.
I think that as long as Malaysian's ,be they Politicians from whatever party or commentaters on this blog continue to use derogratary words like "mamak" , "celup" etc.then it does not matter who gets into Govt. as We are all doomed to suffer from ignorance and will never be able to move forward.
Racial and religious tolerance in this country will remain just a Dream of the few.
Many malaysians share this point of view but allow rascim and corruption to continue because we don't speak up enough about it. i too am guilty of this.
Racism in this country is so deeply rooted in the minds of the vast majority of people, who have been made to feel inferior by their leaders who use the excuse that this was started by our "Colonial masters"- ie the 'white man". It is sad and pathetic. The orang asli for example were (and still are) exploited and badly treated by people of Malay, Chinese,Indian,Portugese and British descent (who all arrived on these shores). The 'white man' has not ruled this country for over 51 years but still they continue to be scapegoated as the chief instigators of this ideaology. Shame on us all if we cannot change this stupidity and see that all races are equal as humans. If we cannot end Racism then we are all equally to blame.
