PUTRAJAYA: Barisan Nasional will be ready for a by-election if one for the Pensiangan parliamentary seat is called, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
He said the BN had anticipated the possibility of the Kota Kinabalu High Court declaring null and void the election of Parti Bersatu Rakyat Sabah (PBRS) president Tan Sri Joseph Kurup as the Pensiangan MP in the March 8 polls. "BN accepts the court's decision and we will make preparations to face a possible by-election. "We will do the needful and we are going to ensure a BN victory in Pensiangan," he said after chairing a National Permata Policy meeting yesterday. The BN would, however, appeal the court decision. Present was his wife, Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor who is the National Permata Policy executive committee chairman. In delivering his judgment yesterday, Justice David Wong Dak Wah ruled that the wrongful rejection of the nomination papers of the petitioner, Parti Keadilan Rakyat's Danny Anthony Andipai, had breached his constitutional right to take part in the election. Kurup had been declared the unopposed winner of the parliamentary seat. Najib also brushed off suggestions that the Sept 16 takeover plan by the opposition was gaining momentum, saying that it was just the work of a few people keen on keeping the issue alive. Asked if Malaysia would accede to the demands of the captors of 63 Malaysians currently held hostage in Somalia, Najib said he could not divulge details as it would jeopardise negotiations. "Please realise that it is not that I don't want to talk (about it), but our concern is for the interest and safety of the crew," he said. - nst
