By Debra Chong, The Malaysian Insider There are less than two weeks to the Sept 16 deadline set by opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to take over the federal government but the tripartite coalition known as Pakatan Rakyat has yet to meet and talk about it.
“There are no discussions as yet,” DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng said last night in reply to the frequently asked question. “I’m not going to give a reason,” he said when pressed further on why there have been none to date. However, he stressed, it does not mean that there won’t be any discussion on the matter in the days ahead. Lim, who is also Penang chief minister, was at the political party’s headquarters here for the first meeting of the new central executive committee, elected at its congress two weeks ago. Among other things, the meeting was to set the direction of the party, he said. Part of this new aspiration is to enlist 100,000 new members in the next five years. “We want to be a serious partner in power, to ensure political equality, equal opportunities and social, economic justice,” he said. When pointed out that the DAP was only one component in the opposition alliance, he shot back: “We want to be a responsible partner in power. Without us, they can’t clap at all.” Even though Lim keeps mum on the details of the DAP-Pas-PKR meeting, his statement may be construed to mean that the unlikely alliance is on track to forming the next federal government, if not by Sept 16, then certainly not too far off in the future.
