IT'S good to know that the Government is finally settling down to doing what it is supposed to do. For too long we have waited for the elected MPs to carry out their responsibility of creating and amending legislations. Now they are debating the DNA Bill.
Great! But come to think of it, what and how much good will that Bill do the nation? Day in and day out we hear of petty robbery occurring in the city. Will the DNA Bill come to the rescue? Daily we read about citizens being clobbered by defiant criminals roaming the roads on motorbikes. Will the Bill come to their rescue? We also hear of people being robbed of their lives or dignity. Will the new Bill come to the rescue if we are stuck with botched investigations and evidence collection? We have great facilities for almost everything. But the mentality is not there to fully utilise these resources efficiently and effectively. When will the Government learn? It's easy to table a piece of legislation but has it been fully thought out? Why not tackle the rampant crimes that affect our rights as citizens which we read about daily? I for one would like to know how many robberies or house break-ins go unreported because of the loss of faith in the authorities who are supposed to protect and serve. I believe other issues which demand the utmost urgency for amendment would be those affecting citizenship, laws to punish people who produce fake identification cards and laws to punish people in authority who break the law when they are duty bound to serve the people. These people deserve double or triple the punishment for they know the law but break it. Oddly, I don't see that happening as often as I would like. DNA SAVY, The Star
