The standard of public universities in Malaysia have been going down in recent time and many reasons have been given on why the standards are dropping yet some still refuse to acknowledge that this is the case and claim that it is perfect as it is and students should be thankful and stop complaining.

But this piece is not about public universities in Malaysia as a whole but rather a certain one named UiTM. This university has been appearing a lot in the news lately especially concerning the proposal made by Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim on opening the gates of the institution to 10% of non-bumiputra students and it has caused a great deal of furore.

About 5,000 students marched to protest against the proposal under Gabungan Pelajar Melayu Semenanjung (GPMS) and the UiTM Student Council with the direct backing of the Vice Chancellor. Posters were distributed all over the main campus to promote the protest with headlines such as, “Anda sayang UiTM?”, “ MRSM sudah, SBP sudah, Matrikulasi sudah, JPA sudah, UiTM seterusnya?”, “Ini bukan mengenai kesama rataan bangsa, ini mengenai hak”, “UiTM telah membantu kita, apa sumbangan kita kepada UiTM? Sedarlah wahai bangsaku”.

If one is able to read between the lines, we can see the wordplay here expressing that if a student is to not support this protest, they are one of the ignorant unenlightened ones who do not care for UiTM. Now as a student of the University, I feel disappointed that opinions that differ from the norm are usually labelled as traitors. I have always felt that most of these things are usually politically motivated. I cannot fight the feeling that a NGO such as the GPMS which is headed by someone working right under the Prime Minister, is not exactly a non-partisan group. For this is also one of the organizations that went for the protest at the recent Bar Council forum and went a little, overboard.

The UiTM Student Council which unanimously supported this protest must not be looked upon as the voice of UiTM for they only speak for themselves when they come out with protests such as these and label those who do not support it as traitors to the race. How many students from the institution have spoken out supporting the idea of liberalizing the university? Almost none. But how many students who agreed with the proposal by Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim in silence? A number in the minority, albeit a very significant one. And the sad thing is, there is little avenue for any of them to express themselves in the University or externally. With the little avenue available, those that attempt to express themselves are usually met with threats and childish arguments.

One particular UiTM student was asked to wear black coloured clothing by a senior when he refused to as the colour black on that day meant supporting the protest and he did not support it. The senior could only respond in ways such as asking him whether he was a jew or a homosexual. And this brilliant friend of mine then just answered, “No, I’m a muslim and remember when the Prophet Muhammad SAW ruled Medinah? He had all kinds of races that were hostile towards each other to live peacefully under the open sky. Why would you be afraid of opening this institution to others if you claim to take the prophet as your example?” And the senior who was lost for words just left and slammed the door on him. Although stories like these do not happen everyday in UiTM as many students who share similar views to my friend here are usually fearful of the consequences of speaking openly.

Any sign of disobedience towards policies or so-called UiTM values and ideals are usually not tolerated. Even in class, when certain students question the lecturers, they are usually viewed as “tak sedar diri”. Questioning has never been the culture in Malaysia’s education system but is never really encouraged in the Universities either, where it is supposed to give birth to new ideas and paradigms of thinking. How can we do this when our students keep still and silent? Oscar Wilde once said, “It is through disobedience that progress is made”, and it is no wonder why there has been little groundbreaking research or achievements that could make a difference in society. I remember that in a certain lecture relating to Islamic Law, a student questioned the validity of a certain hadith (Prophet’s sayings) the lecturer mentioned and she was booed by the whole class and the lecturer just said, “Balik baca buku dulu baru cakap!” when in fact I thought that she was the one who read more than the lecturer did. Among the other things that were aimed at her were , “Ni bukan Islam ni! Rejam dia je!” and “Yahudi!” And of course, later on, she was ostracized by many.

These students have no brain, they are emotionally sensitive, simply because there is a clear lack of exposure to the real world. Their action reflects that they would like to be isolated, they are reluctant to be associated with the global community, and worst they are proud of what they are now. Poor Uitm and GPMS smilies/angry.gif smilies/angry.gif smilies/angry.gif

Being the minority sane in a majority insane institute is a difficult life. I can relate fully with what the minority students are going through, but I have no easy answers nor solution. You just cannot cure the cancer without removing the whole tumour and much of the surrounding tissues along with it. Watching the completely insane and fanatical reaction of that VC of UiTM should be enough to give an indication of what the whole faculty of UiTM is like!
All I can say is, if you can, do not enrol in UiTM.

All this has also created a backlash which I am very concerned about. I have read and heard that many employers of corporations, companies and firms are planning to boycott UiTM graduates and many of them quickly label the students as all being idiotic ethno-supremacists. I truly believe that this will only worsen the situation. How could it be fair that you reject the applications of thousands of students on the basis that they come from a certain University? Many brilliant students have also joined UiTM and been deceived to think that it is a brilliant institution of higher learning and some have no other choice due to financial constraints. Many of them do not subscribe to racist principles. It is also sad to see that many Malaysians have begun to neglect the UiTM issue by not giving any thought to it as they believe only incompetent graduates are churned out and they themselves would not care that if it is open or not as they would not send their own children there. This should not be the case at all. A victory for justice is a victory for all and it is our responsibility as the rakyat to bring about change, not the politicians. As to the issue of no non-Malays would want to enter the institution anyway, that is false. I have an Indian friend living with a single mother and who is a bit unlucky in the financial side. He tried to apply for UiTM to achieve his dream to do law once, although he was innocently ignorant of the institution’s policies on race. I did not have the heart to tell him that he could not do so. This is only one story from many others that could not afford the cost of the various private institutions available. As they say, the poor is a part of all races and exclusive to none.

A personal experience with a Mara grad:-

Many, many years ago, I used to work in a bank, and occassionally Mara grads will come in for training for their contitutional given post in the financial industry then. I was a clerk, and being experienced in processing my bills documents using a calculator, obviously I would finished punching (very fast) the keys even before it print out the details on the strip.

Now, comes the grad's turn to do the same. After poking three number keys on the calculator, she paused for a while, and asked me one fascinating question. "WHERE"S THE COMMA?" (on the calculator). My heart fell to the floor, not sure in humour or in anger.

Its perfectly fine , they can keep their "ketuanan " .
However , they must change the name of the said university.
Suggest they rename it to universiti ketuanan or universiti umno , however , don't use our tax money.
We can strikes out the university as it won't make any difference.

Silent minority ?? Why silent, and I don't buy it that they have no avenue to air their views with the Internet and Blogosphere. Any of them with their own blog disseminating their different ideas and feelings to others ?? I can't see any.

What is the point of asking us to be aware of this silent minority when this silent minority obviously has not enough guts to come forward and BE HEARD ... Stand Forth and be COUNTED ! Silence is consent, even if not fully consenting to the Idiot VC's viewpoint, it means they are not committed enough to take a different stand.

So until this silent minority comes forward and make their presence felt, excuse me if I discount them altogether ... at least for the moment !

why are all the previous comments erased?
anyway, like my business partners said, "dont hire UiTM graduates, they under-perform in general, and their mindset is questionable"

by the way, to UiTM students who protested, "jangan jadi katak bawah tempurung aje" or become "hero kampung aje"

This is a case of many rotten apples spoiling it for the few good ones. I am afraid it will be a case of guilt by association. The UiTM certificate now has the same value as a roll of toilet paper. Who screwed up this institution? All those stupid racist amno pissheads including the idiot VC. I suggest that you the silent minority take up a class action suit against amno and the jerk vc for tarnishing UiTM's name and in the process F**ked up your futures in the private sector. Sue the bargers for Billions and then use the money to start up a business as you guys will surely be classified as low standard ethno-supremacist undesirables by recruiters in the private sectors. Sorry to be so harsh but welcome to reality and reality bites harder for all the kataks dibawah tempurung.

OMG I did not know that our University has gone to such a sad state, someone please help, anyone ? Without question we will not learn and the teachers will not know if what they are trying to teach is actually begin transfer across. Then how do we judge what else we need to do to improved ?
After some thought it is most likely, they will say who cares, we set the same simple question year after year in the exam, so there is no excuse that anyone should fail in UiTM.
Third world, in your dreams, in another 50 years we will be lucky if we are not in the fourth or fifth world status.

I want to hire Abu Bakar Bashir to teach Bomb remote control for the Physic Students. Since UiTM uphold the greatness of Islam and 'Malay" special right under NEP, I think we must hire Jemaah Islamiah to conduct riot to abolish AUKU. What do you think?

As the VC of UiTM is of very low intelligence what do you expect the standards of the Deans, Heads of Departments & lecturers to be? What more do you expect the level of competency & skills of the students to be. Can they be better than the mentally challenged VC, Deans, Department Heads, lecturers. Anyone who studies at UiTM would have retarded brains or would suffer from brain damage.
It is perfectly alright for it to be named UiTM because it stands for University for Inspectors of Toilets & Muck. Actually its diploma & degrees are even more worthless than toilet paper which serves a very useful biological function for the human body system.
UiTM's diploma & degree is not even in demand by the "paper lama" man. The landfills and incinerators too find them superfluous & worthless!

At first I thought of just commenting something simple like "not happy? boycott UITM students la! dont hire them!" cos i know a LOT of employers read malaysia today. esp in the private sector.

but then i read kc respect's comment, and i decided that has more... impact!
So here's my personal exp/story:
my company went on a recruitment drive. we are consulting firm in IT specializing in ERP software. we got like nearly 50 000 applications (worldwide). ofcourse the shortlist was for all malaysian candidates. Many of them graduates of UITM. Non got thru. we ended up hiring foreign graduate.

well what would you do when the local candidate fills up the job application with their parents name in spouse name section?!?

Dear Diz (commentor), the reason all these comments surfaced is a direct result of the VC and the students themselves. why protest to fight for something that will continuously keep them under-developed? such mindset will be carried forward in their workplace (if they graduate, anyway) where the grads will not strive to improve themselves, but instead, prefer to stay in their comfort zones, eventhough they know well that they cant compete with the outside world.

To be honest, being personally involved in recruitment, I've written off UiTM grads due to them consistently not living up to expectation during interviews.

Reading this gives me renewed assurance that there are intelligent and well read students studying in UiTM. Thank you for the enlightenment.

I agree that the VC has made himself appear foolish with his UMNO supremacist stance but I think these attacks would be more relevant if leveled at the system rather than UiTM specifically.

UiTM is now a brainwashing facility. Don't question quality of education. That was not its purpose in the first place. This has nothing to do with advancement of Malay Rights. Its all about developing a good stream of young malay racist voters who unswervingly do the bid of UMNO without question. What better way guarantee unimpeded rule in a democratic system than to brainwash the voters?

In the global village of today most universities are keen to have an international mix of students for greater cross breeding of ideas and ideologies eg Harvard, Oxford etc. The U is the only place one can mix with a vast diversity of people as once one works the person is specialised and mixes only with those related to his field. This is why foreign universities produce high calibre students and these often surpass our local graduates.

When I used to interview graduates before I found a vast gap between those from abroad compared to those from Uitm or other local universities. We are too sheltered and narrow and shallow in our thinking. Those from overseas are able to be more creative and think divergently. This is the result of the roundness of education they receive and mix of people at these universities.

Our 'katak di bawah tempurung' attitude will not get us very far and we will be in the same situation 10 years from now. When will our leaders understand that there is nothing racial about opening our univrsity doors to all, including foreign students. We will be all the better from this. Inbreeding is like incest and the result is retarded morons, a biological fact.

You think the students of non-malay are so stupid to accept your unfair distribution of education opportunities???
They had caused racial discrimination among the students in the higher learning institution!!! But all these Umno goons will always deny it.
We want to progress and we need more graduates to develope our beloved country. So why are we rejecting those qualified students?

Wow, that came out of left field! Must say I'm proud to have a -16 rating for that particular post (although the fact that Cruzeiro's illiterate rant registers a 10 is slightly worrying). Fyi, UiTM is not my alma mater (Oxford, dear boy, but hardly relevant). The point I was trying (clearly ineptly) to make is that the entire system of education in Malaysia is deeply flawed and that OTT attacks on UiTM and its students are missing the bigger picture (like Cruzeiro).
