Carolyn Hong's observation on how the veteran is able to enthral the crowd.

Carolyn Hong, The Straits Times

Ceramah - rallies - are always the most entertaining part of an election campaign, and it is no different in Permatang Pauh. After all, opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim is a known orator – witty, funny, with a finely-honed ability to hammer home his points with well-timed repetition and quick humour.

The Barisan Nasional doesn't really do ceramah rounds, and when it does hold one, the crowd rarely matches that of the opposition. I guess it's more fun to hear a bit of government-bashing, than the government being on the defensive.

Anwar's ceramah have been drawing crowds of hundreds to thousands every night. He does about three each night, speaking for less than an hour before rushing off to the next.

The themes are fairly standard. He speaks of the sodomy charge against him, slamming the government for what he describes as a trumped-up accusation to discredit him, and spends time recounting his rectal examination and how his private parts were measured.

He also takes pains to defend the opposition Pakatan Rakyat alliance's multi-racial platform, and to refute claims that he is sacrificing Malay interests for his own political ambition.

So far, the response seems to be good, and the audience responsive, although they tend to clap louder at his salacious recollection of the rectal examination than at his promise to defend multi-racial interests.

Anwar definitely has the edge when it comes to rallies, and going by the response and anecdotal evidence, it appears that he also has the edge in this battle to win the Permatang Pauh by-election.

Even the Umno side appears to concede that. His opponent Arif Shah Omar Shah claims to be catching up, but is still behind Anwar in the vote count. He has been actively going around meeting voters, and attending events.

I have yet to hear him speak at rallies; indeed, so far, he has not held any except for talks to small groups. He said he believes in the personal touch, listening and speaking to individual voters.

This is a truly watershed by-election! Despite sending nearly their entire cabinet team and leaders, they will still loose in this election. The loss of face arising from this election will be difficult for the government to digest and will make them more vindictive and eventually will make more of their MPs leave them!

Anwar's oratory pulls the crowd, and the worry over the mismanagement of BN government pushes the crowd, to his by-election rally!
We need PR to save our country!

Dear Carolyn Hong,

Whereas there is zero plus points for Arif that you could say, you went on to emphasize the small talk on sodomee Anwar needs to defend from.

What about the solutions for all the socio-economic issues, corruption issues and good governance that Anwar speaks about?

Maybe you should meet up with Najis in Paris ?

SAIFUL IS PARADING HIS A**H**E AROUND AND EZAM IS DOING A DEMO HOW HE (SAIFUL) WAS POKED. AND THE DPM ASSURED THAT THIS WONT BE THEIR ISSUE BUT NOW IT IS THE ONLY MAIN ISSUE BEING REPEATED DAILY IN ALL THEIR ROAD SHOWS. WONDER HOW THE WOMENFOLK IN PERMATANG PAUH ARE REACTING.

There is nothing left on the minds of UMNO to catch up with DSAI the only weapon is Saiful butt. This will backfire them to sink faster. Malaysian want a leader that can stable the country not one that use sentiment on sodomy.
I am sure by now Malaysian knows the quality of UMNO leaders they only have ass
hole brains and greed for power and cheat the Malays

BN's leaders have nothing to talk except character assassination,if DSAI were to follow them,he has more hilarious anecdotes to share.BN can fix DSAI because they are the government but in this by election, the rakyat have the final say unless BN can fix each and everyone of the voters here.

Please do not assume the voters are stupid just because you are stupid,we are going to sink UMNO on 26 August and we will do it again come the next general election. This is our promise !

Now, the younger generation is following the footsteps of Saifool, swearing around without knowing what they are swearing about. Even the word SODOMY and LIWAT has been used regularly in daily conversation. Let us hope that they wont practice it.

SoDoMe a favour! Please stop this talk of SODOMY II. The nation is already disgusted to the core with even SODOMY I. Let's move on and drop the BN govt and send it to the doldrums of history.
