Anwar: Sodomy charges — again PDF Print

"It will have no impact whatsoever on the by-election. There will be no legal bar against contesting, and we will proceed to focus on the key issues of the campaign," says Sivarasa, who is also vice-president of Anwar's PKR. "It is a matter of time before he becomes the next Prime Minister."

History is repeating itself in politically embattled Malaysia.

"This is malicious slander, and I'm not guilty," declared former Deputy Prime Minister and current opposition politician Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, 60, on Aug 7 in court after being formally charged for allegedly sodomising a former male aide, 23-year-old Mohd Saiful Bukhari Azlan.

Anwar, who spent more than five years in jail before a court threw out earlier charges in 2004, helped power a strong performance by the three main opposition parties in national elections last February. The leader of a new opposition alliance, he recently announced his intention to run in a by-election on Aug. 26 for a seat in Parliament that had been held by his wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail, who resigned to pave the way for his formal return to politics.

Although current Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi has repeatedly denied being behind the charges, many analysts see the allegations as politically motivated. (While homosexuality is not illegal in Malaysia, it is against sharia law that applies to the country's majority Muslim population.)

Anwar denies any wrongdoing, and his legal team has released a medical report issued by a hospital in Kuala Lumpur stating that the alleged victim showed no sign of being assaulted. R. Sivarasa, a lawyer representing Anwar, is confident of winning the case. "It will have no impact whatsoever on the by-election. There will be no legal bar against contesting, and we will proceed to focus on the key issues of the campaign," says Sivarasa, who is also vice-president of Anwar's PKR. "It is a matter of time before he becomes the next Prime Minister."

The ruling coalition has reason to worry about Anwar, who despite the latest charges is free on personal bond and can run in the by-election. Should he win, he will be well-positioned to lead the opposition alliance consisting of the PKR, Pas and the multiracial DAP.

"This will be the mother of all by-elections," says Tricia Yeoh, director of the Centre for Public Policy Studies in Kuala Lumpur, who believes that the international community will be watching closely what happens.

Political analysts say Malaysia is seeing for the first time a two-party system with a strong opposition. That could force the ruling coalition, led by Umno, to fight corruption and reform economic policies that have long given an advantage to the country's majority Malays, says Steven Gan, editor-in-chief of independent news website Malaysiakini.com.

The controversial New Economic Policy, launched by Umno in 1971 as an affirmative action programme for Malays, is often seen by its critics as a discriminatory economic policy against the minority Chinese and Indians.

Gan thinks that the implications of Anwar's return would extend beyond Malaysia. "If he wins, Anwar would provide a very moderate version of Islam, much more so than current Prime Minister Abdullah," he says. Although his opposition alliance includes the Muslim fundamentalist party Pas, Gan argues, Anwar has tempered the extreme Islamic rhetoric of the party's leaders since taking the helm of the coalition.

Long before the latest twist in this political saga, Malaysia's financial markets were in disarray. Two months ago bond markets were roiled when independent power producers defaulted on covenants attached to their bonds because of an unpopular windfall tax policy by the government. The Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange Index has dropped 22% this year, while the ringgit is trading at a six-month low against the US dollar.

Clarity, you said I can't wait to celebrate. Anwar, can you keep aside a budget for plenty of fireworks in Putrajaja.

I would suggest Anwar's Government keep its money for useful projects to benefit the country.
We, Malaysians, will donate to fund the fireworks at Putrajaya once Anwar gets in.

"Sayfool" had made UMNO's Bodohwi government a "fool" in the eyes of the International community. I wonder how Bodohwi will face leaders around the world in the future.

But than again, this stupid PM has a very thick skin, even the notorios Sarawak's "Bujang Senang" would be envious of the PM's thick skin!!! smilies/grin.gif

The sodomy case is the Father of ALL Desperations.

The PM, DPM, AG, IGP are throwing everything into this as their last act to survive. It is a short while before they lose everything anyway.

When Pakatan takes over, the rakyat demands the NEW ACA to investigate them for corrupt abuse of power.

I only look foreward to the day when DSAI comes into power whereby he immediately sacks those high power arrogant and totally useless people starting from the Election commission, Police, some of the judiciary people, Bank Negara governor (does Pak Lah knows she is still hanging around?), deputy finance minister (does Pak Lah knows that's an Indian disguised as a Malay?), and don't stop there.... pour plenty od antiseptic to clean out the filth that's been clogging Malaysia system for the past 51 years.

I am all for a Bangsa Malaysia and equal rights under the Law, with an independent Judiciary. That is what DSAI stands for and I support him whole-heartedly ! Also, for lower fuel prices as that impacts on my daily livelihood, a very pragmatic consideration, but nonetheless important amongst all the ideological considerations !

All in All, whether ideology-wise or pragmatism-wise, I am certainly voting for DSAI and Pakatan RAKYAT !! We should also start a PETITION to the United Nations and the International Court of Justice to look into the BLATANT ABUSE of the "Legal" Process in Malaysia for POLITICAL PERSECUTION of DSAI !!

It is so plain for ALL to see that this is the last stand for PM, DPM, A-G, IGP, and Shaftee Abdullah (the Sodomologist Extraordinaire !!) before they are cast aside by the RAKYAT !! This shameless b*stards just want to stay in power to keep on enriching themselves and their cronies while robbing the RAKYAT BLIND !!

There must be some international law against economic plunder we can use to get the United Nations to HUNT down these DESPOTS for plundering and raping their own RAKYAT when they were entrusted to look after the RAKYAT'S interests !! There must be some international recourse for this SORDID BETRAYAL by the Barisan Najis !!

An occult confine their members into a way of thinking (May I say, lack of thinking), whether it is wrong or right. To unable to exercise thinking outside of a box is actually a CAPTIVE.

This is how to manipulate the members and if they are the ruling party then the people. They only want brainless captives – all admiring and unquestionable loyalty. However, as soon as they discover they have lost the plot, they will escalate the state of siege.

Greed and Selfishness has no limits. As a result in this game of greed and selfishness, more and more will be left out over time. Those that think they are part of this group will find as soon as they served their needs will also become expendable.

So any issues to divide such as race, religion etc. is a red herring to cover greed and selfishness. Eventually these twin tower policies will consume itself out, leaving only grief.

The root to the matter is this immoral pursuit of racist policy, which breeds more immorality.

We are in a conundrum where we are because of this UMNO occult. The ending is never good and history this journey is suicidal for all.

So wake up, people, wakes up. Any avocation of race as a barrier - be aware of these immoral runts. No matter how they repackage this – it will and always has been a futile exercise used for manipulation to serve their greedy and selfish needs only.

As an ordinary Malay I dont agree to the above wording "majority Malays". It should be changed to the "UMNOPUTRA'S TOP ELITES AND ITS CRONIES".

By definition oral sex is also covered under "carnal intercourse against the order of nature". The offence is the same as sodomy.

We even have the concrete hard evidence in the form of a video as well as the the self declaration of Chua Soi Lek to the public that he is the one in the video. Yet BN and the police took no action!

Section 377B is consensual sodomy, yet UMNO and the police not only took no action in charging him for sodomy but they are giving Saiful their full 24-hour-round-the-clock protection to him!

Why take action only on Anwar?

The double standards exhibited by UMNO, the AG's office and the police are so clear for the world to see. When the world and right thinking Malaysians commented on the many injustices happening here, this UMNO Government thinks that they were born to rule Malaysia and they can act in any which way they like - including wanton wastages, corruption and intimidation of dissent.

If Ali, Ah Chong or Muthu is caught red handed for sodomy, would the national traffic grid be locked down, thousands of police, FRU personnel employed around the clock and the whole Government administration and time wasted on this small issue? Why don't the police go to the back lanes of Chow Kit area; everyday there are hundreds of sodomy cases happening and no police action taken?

If this is not political persecution or stupid power crazy display to the highest degree, I don't know what is!

great!! sodomy is part of human life. i don't believe that none of the ministers in malaysia ever try to poke their wives, mistress or even animals from back doors! sorry for dirty words i'm using here.

if the police or all doctors ordered by government to examine all Ministers wives' anus then saiful's case will appear through their backdoor! this case is a hunting case. no manner at all.
