On the eve of the Government making a decision on the hiving off Institut Jantung Negara to Sime Darby Bhd., there is a story that deserve the attention on how the life of someone who has contributed immensely to society is being gambled because of the demands of capitalism supersedes the importance of making a social and humanitarian decision. |

I read with apprehension at the recent announcements by Sime Darby Berhad and Air Asia with respect to their receiving government approval to build a new low-cost terminal at Labu, Negeri Sembilan. The announcements coincided with a statement by Malaysia Airports Berhad (MAHB) that it is ready to construct a new low-cost terminal to replace the existing LCCT at KLIA. The statements, and the subsequent comments by Air Asia spokespersons, gave the impressions that a new low-cost terminal is urgently needed, that MAHB has not been responsive to the needs of Air Asia, that Air Asia could easily save 15 pct of operating costs by moving to the new terminal at Labu and that not a single sen of public money will be utilised. |

thestar reporters still don’t know how to count numbers in a crowd. Remember how the 40,000 - 60,000 strong BERSIH crowd on 10-Eleven was then reported by thestar as a crowd of 4,000? |

I had heard of Haris Ibrahim even before I met him. Some acquaintances had told me of a lawyer who was seemingly singlehandedly taking on the world in his defence of principle. At the time he was involved in the case of the Besut Four, four individuals who had been convicted by a syariah court and sentenced to three years jail even though they had renounced Islam. His was the titanic struggle that pointing to an unpopular and inconvenient truth always is. |

In his seminal work, “Islam And The Secular State: Negotiating The Future Of Shari’a” (Harvard; 2008), the noted scholar Abdullahi Ahmed An-Naim observes that it is not possible for people of any society to keep their religious belief, commitments and concerns out of their political decisions and choices. |

On 31st July, 2005, the Terengganu state government ripped into the heart of the Sky Kingdom community in Besut, tore down ornamental structures built as a labour of love by some of the gentlest people I have ever met, and flattened the village, sparing only dilapidated wooden houses and the gravesite of Mad Ya who, since 2000, had his statutory declaration that he renounced Islam rejected by officialdom and who yet, upon his death in 2003, was refused a burial plot at the Muslim cemetary by that same officialdom on the grounds that he was an apostate. |
